The Prodrive P25: The Iconic Rally Legend Reborn

Written by Oleksandr Lugovyi, instagram: @oleks_lugovyi

To the average human, this Subaru Impreza just looks like your bog standard “old” daily, but to the average petrol head it is a car of dreams, the Prodrive P25 is based on the iconic Subaru Impreza 22B. Only 424 22Bs were ever made which made them a cult classic and every rally fanatic’s wet dream. Turn the clock 25 years later and a performance tuning specialist, Prodrive, has gone to not only recreate this iconic piece of history but turn it into something absolutely stunning and jaw-dropping.

With technology having advanced greatly over the past quarter of a decade so has the engineering and performance of cars too. The Prodrive P25 is what the 22B would’ve been if it were released today, thankfully they kept with the heritage benchmark 2.5 litre-flat-four boxer engine but has been completely re-engineered meaning that the engine churns out over 400bhp and 600 Nm of torque sent to all four wheels, this has been matched with a super responsive six-speed semi-automatic gearbox, with a WRC derived launch control and anti-lag turbo system. All this ensures 0-62 mph is achieved in under 3.5 seconds and the top speed is somewhere past 150 mph. However, what is fantastic is the Akrapovic titanium and stainless-steel racing exhaust system. This will no doubt sound amazing and with extensive use of carbon fibre for the build the P25 weighs less than 1200kg.

The exterior just looks iconic and completely untouched, every angle, alignment and body panel has been lightened and blended with carbon fibre. It has a classic sleek late 90s look, and the black wheels compliment the car well with the legendary Impreza blue. The price, however, with all these fancy upgrades and modern features is well over the £552k region. It’s a super rare car, with a super high price but the owner of this will definitely have a passion for this classic piece of motoring history.

The interior does come with some lovely creature comforts, high use of luxury materials such as leather, Alcantara and carbon fibre makes it a genuinely lovely place to sit in. There is air conditioning, bucket seats and even an infotainment system with data logging. It might be based on a 25-year-old car but it surely doesn’t feel, nor look or feel like one.

If you want a chance to see the car in person, how it pays homage to Subaru’s rally roots then the first development car will be making several trials on the uphill track at Goodwood Festival of Speed on Thursday 23rd June, only 25 models will be produced to match the 25 years since the release of the 22B, and fair to say they will be sold out quite quickly so if you can grab yours whilst they are still about.
